Visit Vaison-la-Romaine
Vaison la
Romaine is a small town north of Vaucluse, between the Mont Ventoux,
the height of the Dentelles de Montmirail and the Rhone Valley, near the
department of Drôme. The Upper Town of Vaison is largely mediaeval,
built a high rocky hill above the Ouvèze, a river that floods are
sudden and violent. Vaison was a thriving Roman city: it was the capital
of a Gallic tribe allied to the Romans, whose territory extended Voconces
of the surrounding region. There are still many Roman remains at Vaison:
an amphitheater where there is a regular live music, theater or dance,
Gallo-Roman bridge that spans the Ouvèze, the archaeological site
of the City, which was reached a high area of the Roman city. See also
the Cathedral of Our Lady of Nazareth in the Romanesque style, with an
adjoining cloister.
