Stay in the Luberon: villages, landscapes and Provençal art de vivre

The Luberon is one of the great landscapes of Provence: a massif of perched villages, wooded combes, vineyards, olive groves and ochre earth, between the Vaucluse and the Alpes de Haute Provence. A guest house in the Luberon makes it possible to explore without changing address, choosing a base according to the pace of the stay: famous villages, scenic roads, markets, walks or quieter moments in the garden.

Where to stay to visit the Luberon?

For a first stay, the area around Gordes, Ménerbes and Bonnieux is especially practical. It keeps the perched villages, viewpoints, dry-stone roads, the Village des Bories and Sénanque Abbey and its lavender within easy reach. It is also the most sought-after area in summer, when a guest house with parking, a garden or a pool becomes a real comfort.

Around Roussillon, the stay takes on a different colour. Ochre landscapes, red trails, luminous facades and the villages of the Pays d'Apt suit travellers who want to alternate short visits, photography, markets and easy walks.

Choosing between the northern and southern Luberon

The northern side gathers the best-known images of the Luberon: Gordes, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Ménerbes, Oppède-le-Vieux, the ochres and the Calavon valley. Below Bonnieux, Pont Julien also recalls the route of the Via Domitia through this landscape. Distances are short, but the roads invite a slower pace, especially in high season.

The southern Luberon, around Lourmarin, Cucuron, Vaugines or Ansouis, offers a softer atmosphere, often quieter and more open towards the Durance and Aix-en-Provence. It is a good choice for a more peaceful stay, between vineyards, villages, small roads and shaded terraces.

Villages, markets and landscapes to explore

The Luberon is best discovered in stages rather than through long visits. A day can combine a perched village, a market, a ridge road or a walk through the ochres. Apt, Cavaillon and Manosque are useful landmarks for markets and access, while the villages bring charm, viewpoints and a slower rhythm to the stay.

Local produce is part of the experience: Luberon AOC wines, olive oil, goat cheeses, candied fruit from Apt, honey, aromatic herbs and lavender products give the markets a strong local identity. Further north, lavender around Sault and the Albion plateau extends this culture towards the high lands of Ventoux and Lure. In spring and autumn, the light and temperatures are ideal for walking. In summer, mornings and late afternoons are the most pleasant times to visit, before returning to the coolness of a guest house.

A protected natural area

The Luberon Regional Natural Park protects a varied landscape of garrigue, holm oaks, pine woods, ochre cliffs, combes and old villages. This diversity explains the appeal of the massif: visitors may come for the most famous villages, but also for a quieter stay, attentive to secondary roads, markets and landscapes that change with the seasons.

Plan your stay in the Luberon

What is the best time to stay in the Luberon?

The Luberon can be enjoyed throughout the year. Spring and autumn are often the mildest seasons for visiting villages and walking through the landscapes, but summer is also a beautiful time for tourism, lively, bright and rich in Provençal flavours.

Spring: The light is soft, temperatures are ideal for walking through perched villages, and the countryside comes back to life. It is a wonderful season to discover Gordes, Bonnieux, Ménerbes, Roussillon or Lourmarin, browse the markets and enjoy terraces before the high season.

Summer: Days are long and very sunny, markets are lively, and villages come alive with terraces, exhibitions, concerts and summer evenings. It is also a privileged season for local produce: Luberon AOC wines, olive oil, Provence honey, goat cheese, ripe fruit, aromatic herbs and lavender products give the markets a particularly generous atmosphere. The most famous sites, especially Gordes, Roussillon and the ochre landscapes, are busier, but a guest house with a garden or pool makes the stay very pleasant.

Autumn: Vineyards, forests and villages take on warmer colours. Temperatures often remain pleasant in September and October, with a quieter atmosphere for visits, walks and guest house stays. It is also a fine season for wineries, farmers' markets, mushrooms, squash, cheeses and early autumn flavours.

Winter: The Luberon becomes calmer and more intimate. It is a good season for short stays, quiet villages, local markets and Provence landscapes in a very clear light.

Where to stay in the Luberon?

To choose where to stay in the Luberon, start with the kind of trip you have in mind: iconic villages, ochre landscapes, the quieter southern Luberon, or easy access to markets and scenic roads.

Around Gordes, Ménerbes and Bonnieux: This is the most practical area for a first stay, with the best-known perched villages, viewpoints, stone lanes and vineyard landscapes.

Roussillon and ochre country: A good choice for the most colourful landscapes of the Luberon, with red cliffs, ochre trails and luminous villages.

Lourmarin and the southern Luberon: This side of the massif has a softer and often quieter atmosphere, with Cucuron, Vaugines and Ansouis, between vineyards, hills and valleys opening towards the Durance and Aix-en-Provence.

Apt, Cavaillon and Manosque: These towns and their surroundings are useful bases for exploring several parts of the massif, enjoying markets and reaching the main discovery routes.

What to do in the Luberon during a stay in Provence?

The Luberon brings together some of the most characteristic experiences of a stay in Provence, with villages, landscapes, markets and art de vivre.

A guest house in the Luberon allows you to take time to travel from one village to another, with a more personal stay than a simple tourist stop.
