A garden suspended in a perched village
In Grignan, in the Drôme Provençale, the ancient roses are not confined behind gates: they climb along centuries-old walls, line the stairways, and bloom in the shade of the calades. More than 400 rose bushes, representing some 150 varieties, form an open-air rose garden, harmoniously integrated into the heart of the village.
An Open-Air Rose Garden
Created in 1991 at the initiative of the association Grignan, Pierres et Roses Anciennes, these plantings illustrate another way of experiencing heritage: living, sensory, and generously shared. Here one discovers the Alba, Centifolia, Bourbon families, the delicate Tea hybrids, as well as the Françoise de Grignan rose, a contemporary tribute to Madame de Sévigné’s famous daughter.
A Landscape of Fragrance and Light
Every year, from May to June, the blooming roses illuminate the blond façades and the ancient ramparts under the spring sunlight. Their scents mingle with those of the lavender fields, meticulously lined, which punctuate the landscape around Grignan.
A Discovery Step by Step
The Rose Trail invites free wandering, letting your steps guide you inevitably to the Collegiate Church of Saint-Sauveur and the château crowning the village. For those wishing to go further, guided tours and an annual festival — held on the third Saturday of May — celebrate the dialogue between botany, architecture, and the art of living.
