Sommières: Vidourle, Roman bridge and medieval centre

Sommières and the Vidourle
Sommières and the Vidourle

Sommières, a Vidourle town between Nîmes and Montpellier

Sommières lies in the Gard, close to the Hérault border. The town occupies a crossing point on the Vidourle, between Nîmes and Montpellier, in an area of vineyards, garrigue and old villages.

The Vidourle and ancient bridge

The bridge of Sommières is based on a Roman structure built to cross the Vidourle. Part of its arches is now integrated into the town. The river, known for Mediterranean floods, has strongly influenced the layout of streets and quays.

Old centre and castle

The medieval centre keeps narrow streets, covered passages, gates and old houses. The castle, set above the town, recalls Sommières’ defensive role. The annual medieval festival belongs to this local history, without being the only way to understand the town.

Vineyards and nearby villages

The surrounding area is part of an old wine-growing zone, linked with the Vaunage and the Vidourle plains. Nearby roads lead to Calvisson, Junas, Villevieille, Sauve and the first Cévennes foothills.

Between Gard, Hérault and the coast

Sommières is a practical base for Nîmes, Montpellier, the Petite Camargue beaches and the Cévennes. The location suits a stay combining town visits, markets, villages and garrigue landscapes.
